How to Take Candid Shots for Oil Paintings

by Sharon Goodminde

The right candid photograph can be a wonderful candidate for a portrait painting. Snapping a picture while the subjects are in the act of something spontaneous gives the image a genuine and authentic feel. Such lovely shots of candid moments add life and vibrancy to beautiful oil paintings.

Many instances, the perfect children and pets photography comes from simple candid shots. Such special moments ought to be treated specially and nothing beats more than turning them into beautiful oil paintings. But first, we need to be able to take a good candid shot. Here are some useful pointers:

Bring your camera with you everywhere! You never know when that special moment will arise. You want to be ready when it does! If you don’t have your camera handy, using the camera feature on your phone is the next best thing.

It is good to have photographs with high quality and resolution. With a good quality photograph, your portrait will turn out good as well. Nevertheless, if your photos happened to be dim or blurry, our skillful artists will still be able to transform them into beautiful oil paintings.

Now, we have to ensure that the subject is unaware that they are being photographed. If not, you will be able to sense a change in their behavior, making them more self conscious. This is attributed to the works of the subconscious mind and applies to animals as well!

The essence of a candid shot lies in the naturalness of the people in action. Thus once you enter into the personal space of the subjects, their interactions with the object or environment will not feel genuine and authentic anymore.

Try to fit into the surroundings as much as possible and not appear to be too obvious. You can do so by using the zoom function of camera while keeping a distance from the subject. Turning on your flash light is a big No. You don’t want to risk making your subject feel uncomfortable.

If it is not possible to be outside of their personal space, keep taking photos for an extended period of time. Even if the subjects are aware of the camera, after a while they will take their focus away from it, and resume what they were doing before. This leads us to the next point:

The more photos the better! Keep taking photos and don’t be embarrassed about taking multiple shots of the same scene! You don’t have to scrimp on films for a digital camera either. Multiple shots help reduce the probability of getting a blurred image.

It will be useful should your camera have the continuous shooting mode. Do make full use of it to capture that perfect candid moment which you desire. Then, your oil painting will look great as well!

Mixing up the angles and perspectives creates more exciting and interesting photos too. One way is to shoot from your hip level. This not only makes shooting less obvious, it also render new perspectives. You can crouch down or stand on an elevation as well. Just let your creative juices flow!

It will be good if the picture is taken when the subjects are interacting with each other or in activity. Since they are in the midst of doing something, their focus will be on their activities and not you.

You can capture interesting relationships and level of involvement which will add to the spontaneity of the photograph. You will then be able to tell the story behind the image taken.

When you take a live action photograph, there is a big difference between a posed one, and you can capture emotions and feelings a lot better.

With all these, you are now ready for candid photography and one step closer to creating your own beautiful oil painting.
